What We Do

Honest Diagnosis, Then The Right Repair

Bonded leather is approximately 17 percent leather fibres compressed onto a fabric backing and topped with a polyurethane finish. PU faux leather (also sold as leatherette, vegan leather, art leather, rexine) is 100 percent synthetic - a polyurethane or PVC topcoat over a polyester or cotton scrim. Both fail the same way: the topcoat lifts, cracks, and peels off in flakes after 2 to 5 years. The fabric backing is exposed, and the sofa starts shedding pieces of itself onto the floor.

Real leather can be filled, sealed, and re-pigmented. Bonded and PU faux cannot - the failure is at the layer interface, not in the surface. What we CAN do: PU re-skin (apply a new polyurethane topcoat on a stripped, primed substrate) where the fabric backing is still intact, edge sealing where lifting is local, and pigment refresh where colour fading is the only issue. What we WILL NOT do: pretend a sheet-peeling sofa is restorable when reupholstery in real leather is the right honest answer. We tell you the truth at the free diagnosis, and you walk out with a clear decision either way.

Substrate Identification First

We identify whether the sofa is bonded leather (Leatherex, Leather Match), PU faux (Rexine, Vegan, Art Leather), PVC vinyl, or split leather - each fails differently and has a different repair window.

PU Re-Skin Where Backing Holds

When the fabric backing is intact and only the topcoat has failed, we strip, prime, and apply a fresh polyurethane skin in the original colour. Looks new, but expect 2-3 years of life - not the 8+ years a real leather repair gives.

Edge Sealing for Local Lifting

Where lifting is restricted to seam edges or armrest borders, we apply a contact adhesive and a flexible edge sealer. Quick, affordable, and stops the lift from spreading - typically buys 18-24 months more service.

Pigment Refresh on PU

Where the topcoat is intact but the pigment has faded, we colour-refresh with a PU-compatible pigment system. Common on bonded leather sofas in sun-exposed positions.

Honest Reupholstery Referral

When the substrate is past saving (sheet-peeling, exposed fabric backing across more than 30 percent of the panel), we say so and recommend reupholstery in real leather. We dont sell jobs we cant stand behind.

Strip & Prime

Where repair is the right call, strip the failed topcoat with a leather-safe stripper. Edge-feather the boundary so the new layer steps cleanly into the surrounding panel. Apply PU adhesion primer.

Apply 2-4 micro-coats of a flexible polyurethane top in the original colour. For local lifting, contact-adhesive plus a flexible edge sealer. Hand-feathered into the surrounding finish.

Whats the difference between bonded leather and PU faux leather?

Bonded leather is approximately 17 percent leather fibres compressed onto a fabric backing with a polyurethane top. PU faux (Rexine, Vegan Leather, Leatherette) is 100 percent synthetic - PU or PVC over a polyester scrim. Both fail at the topcoat-backing interface and peel in sheets after 2-5 years. Real leather, by contrast, can last decades.

Can a peeling bonded sofa be repaired permanently?

No, never permanently. The peeling is a layer-interface failure - the glue between the topcoat and the fabric backing has failed. We can re-skin where backing holds (2-3 years extra service), edge-seal where lifting is local (18-24 months), or refer to reupholstery if backing has shredded.

Is reupholstery a better long-run answer for bonded sofas?

Often yes - especially when peeling covers more than 30 percent of the surface. Real-leather reupholstery on a sofa whose frame is good buys you 15-25 more years vs. 2-3 years from a re-skin. We tell you honestly which path is cheaper across a 5-year horizon.

Will a re-skin look like real leather?

It looks like a brand-new bonded sofa - which is to say it looks like the day you bought it. The grain pattern, sheen, and feel will match the original PU faux finish. It will not look like real aniline or full-grain leather - that is a different material entirely.

My PU sofa is only fading, not peeling. Is that fixable?

Yes - pigment refresh on PU is one of the easier wins in our service. We use a PU-compatible pigment system to restore the original colour. Lasts 2-3 years before another refresh, costs a fraction of re-skin or reupholstery.

Are bonded leather sofas worth buying in the first place?

Honest answer: no, not at any premium price point. Real leather lasts 4-8 times as long with proper care. The cost-per-year of a real leather sofa is usually lower than a bonded equivalent, even at higher upfront cost. We say this even though half our bonded repair business depends on people not knowing this.
