Bonded leather is approximately 17 percent leather fibres compressed onto a fabric backing and topped with a polyurethane finish. PU faux leather (also sold as leatherette, vegan leather, art leather, rexine) is 100 percent synthetic - a polyurethane or PVC topcoat over a polyester or cotton scrim. Both fail the same way: the topcoat lifts, cracks, and peels off in flakes after 2 to 5 years. The fabric backing is exposed, and the sofa starts shedding pieces of itself onto the floor. Real leather can be filled, sealed, and re-pigmented. Bonded and PU faux cannot - the failure is at the layer interface, not in the surface. What we CAN do: PU re-skin (apply a new polyurethane topcoat on a stripped, primed substrate) where the fabric backing is still intact, edge sealing where lifting is local, and pigment refresh where colour fading is the only issue. What we WILL NOT do: pretend a sheet-peeling sofa is restorable when reupholstery in real leather is the right honest answer.
