A 14-year-old Chester Moon.
Its nubuck nap had crushed down flat.

Fourteen years under daily weight had crushed the nubuck nap - the fine raised fibres that give this hide its suede-like hand - flat on both seats, so it read shiny and bald. I dry-brushed against the grain and teased the fibres upright again. No water, no dye. The aged patina stayed, and the hide is good for years more.

Chester Moon: the soft seat looks flat and bald

The Chester Moon and Selene wear nubuck - a hide buffed to raise a fine fuzzy nap, the tiny upright fibres that give it that suede hand. Under your weight the nap crushes flat over the years and glazes shiny and bald. Most owners then rub conditioner in, which only mats the fibres and traps grime deeper. I lift the nap back up instead - no creams, no cover-up.

How we fix it We brush the flattened patch, lift out the trapped dirt without using water, and bring the soft texture back up. No glossy coat - just the original surface, soft again.

Panama and Nausicaa: faded colour from sunlight

Baxter's aniline leathers take their colour from dye soaked right into the hide, with no pigment layer on top to block sunlight. So a sofa next to a big sunny window fades faster than one in the shade - usually on the armrests and headrests first. People often think it's dirt and scrub harder, which doesn't help. The wrong fix is to spray a coat of paint over it, because that flattens the soft, natural look for good. We re-dye instead. See our colour fading repair.

How we fix it We match the original colour against an unfaded part of the sofa, then build it back up in light coats of dye that soak in - no glossy topcoat. The colour stays even and the leather keeps its soft feel.

Chester Moon: buttons pulling loose on the back

The Chester Moon, designed by Paola Navone, has that deep buttoned back where each button is held by a linen thread pulled tight. After 8 to 12 years the thread wears and a button pops through the leather, leaving a small split around the hole. The leather around it puckers and that part of the back loses its shape.

How we fix it We re-fix the loose buttons with the original-style brass buttons and matching linen thread, and re-pack the cushion so the buttoning sits evenly again. About one afternoon per panel.

My Chester Moon's soft surface has gone flat - can it be fixed?
Yes - this is the most common Baxter repair we get. The Chester Moon is covered in nubuck, a soft suede-like leather, and where you sit it presses flat and goes shiny over the years. We brush it, lift out the trapped dirt without using water, and bring the soft texture back up. No creams and no glossy coat over the top. What kind of leather does Baxter use?
All of it is real leather - no fabric, no plastic. Baxter uses several types: Nabuk and Nubuck Vintage (soft, suede-like nubuck), Vinage (a full-aniline leather, meaning the colour is dyed right into the hide with no coating on top), Cervo (fine deer leather), Boxter calf (smooth calf with a light protective finish), and Nabuk Steel (brushed nubuck with a metallic sheen). Each one needs to be cleaned and treated differently, so we check which yours is - it takes about five minutes on-site.
Can you match the colour without painting over the leather?
Yes. On Baxter's aniline leathers (Vinage, Nabuk) the colour sits in the hide itself, so you can't spray paint over it - that flattens the soft, natural look for good. Instead we read the exact colour off an unfaded part of the sofa with a meter, mix the dye to match, and build it back in light coats that soak in. No coating over the top. On Boxter calf, which already has a thin protective finish, we add a light barrier coat to match. Knowing which leather needs which is exactly where general repair shops get Baxter wrong.

Before I re-dye a faded Baxter I read the true colour off a hidden, unfaded strip of the hide with a meter, then mix aniline dye - the kind that soaks into the grain rather than sitting on top - to that reading. Matched by measurement, not guessed by eye. And I never seal an aniline hide under a topcoat; that hard top film would kill the soft pull-up and the way the colour shifts as the leather moves.
