Your fear is that a heavy generic recoat flattens the living patina your Pelle Frau has earned, or that you get sold a full refinish it never needed. Both are real risks: full-aniline Pelle Frau is the most delicate and most rewarding leather to restore, and a generic hand causes permanent damage. So on every Vanity Fair, Chester One, Vanessa, Archibald and 1919 we work pH-neutral, silicone-free and alkaline-free, doing only what the piece needs. Specialist same-day in-home restoration across India, from ₹4,500 / seat.
Patina disruption, localized aniline color loss, Chester button cracks, Dezza piping wear , each failure mode is specific to the full-aniline grade and construction of Poltrona Frau pieces. The wrong product causes permanent damage. Three case files from India.
Pelle Frau develops a living patina , a depth of color and surface character that accumulates over years of use and light exposure. This patina is the leather's identity. Alkaline cleaners, silicone-based conditioners, and solvent sprays , including most consumer leather care products , strip or coat the aniline dye layer, permanently disrupting the patina. The damage is irreversible with standard methods. Only pH-neutral, solvent-free, alkaline-free products are safe on Pelle Frau. Identify your leather type before applying anything.
Aniline dye penetrates the leather fiber rather than sitting on the surface as pigment does. This means color loss on Pelle Frau is not a topcoat issue , the dye has migrated out of the fiber in the affected zone, typically at seat wear points, armrest contact areas, or where sunlight falls directly. Recoloring with standard pigment products blocks the grain and kills the aniline character permanently. Correct treatment requires aniline-grade dye retouching with feathered edges to match the surrounding patina depth. See the full leather glossary for aniline grade definitions.
Chester One and the classic Poltrona Frau Chester sofa place the Pelle Frau leather under sustained tension at each tuft button point, creating radial stress cracks over time , particularly in dry AC environments. Separately, the Dezza armchair's piping seams , where leather wraps a cord edge , experience surface wear and color loss at the contact ridge. Both are structural-meets-surface problems that require treatment at the fiber level, not just a topcoat pass. Cracked leather repair protocol adapted for full-aniline grades.
An owner's 1994 Vanity Fair armchair , alkaline cleaner damage reversed, aniline dye depth restored, patina preserved. Same-day, in-home. The piece still reads as aged, not as restored.
Photographed in studio · IndiaEvery Poltrona Frau case follows a strict chemical protocol: pH-neutral, solvent-free, silicone-free, alkaline-free throughout. The patina is treated as an asset, not a surface to strip. Assessment and written plan before any product touches the leather.

"Our Vanity Fair armchair had been treated with the wrong conditioner and the patina was gone in patches. They reversed the damage and matched the surrounding patina depth. You can't see where the patchiness was. Remarkable work on a delicate piece."
"The button cracks on my Chester One were getting worse every winter. They repaired every crack point and the colour match on the aniline is exact. Nobody touches a Poltrona Frau without knowing what Pelle Frau actually is - they clearly do."
"I was quoted 3.8 lakh to re-cover my Archibald. They repaired it for 38,000 and preserved the aged character I specifically didn't want to lose. This is the only right answer for Pelle Frau. Couldn't be happier."
Pelle Frau aniline dye is not a surface coat , it lives inside the fiber. Matching it requires a colorimeter reading against the surrounding patina, not against a factory swatch. Δ E ≤ 2 means the repair zone is indistinguishable from the aged leather around it.
