Cassina Designer Sofa Repair & Restoration · India

The real fear is a generic fix flattening what made your Cassina a design object, not just a seat. We read yours as the specific piece it is - the LC2's chrome cradle, the Maralunga's folding back, the Tufty-Time - and restore only what the patina, its earned surface, asks for: a crazed topcoat at the seat fold, a seized recline, tufts worked loose. From ₹4,500 a seat. Send two photos over WhatsApp and a written assessment follows within 30 minutes.

Putting a Cassina right,
in the room

Four moves from diagnosis to finish, where the sofa sits. Tyson leads every Cassina job and arrives with the full kit - leather dyes, matched thread, and the Maralunga mechanism parts - so the work is done where the piece lives, not in a distant workshop. A written note on exactly what was done is left with you before he goes.

Cassina LC2 leather restoration on-site - India
From the casebook · LC2 pair Restored 2026

A matched pair of LC2 Grand Confort.
The pigmented topcoat had crazed along the seat fold.

Two photos came in - the pigmented finish crazing where the seat meets the back on both chairs, the collagen fibre (the leather's structural protein layer) still sound beneath it. We treated the cushions in place, never touched the chrome cradle, filled the crazing with a flexible filler and brought the colour back to an exact read. Finished that same afternoon. A pair the owner had given up on now carries years more.

Where they fail

Three problems we see most on Cassina sofas

The same few problems keep coming up on Cassina pieces in India - cracked leather on the LC2 and LC3, a Maralunga back that won't recline, and loose tufting on the Tufty-Time. Here are the three we fix most often, and what each one really takes to put right. If any term is new, our leather glossary explains it.

Casebook Three classics
Case 01 01
Cassina LC2 cushion with cracked leather along the seat fold
Cassina LC2 · cracked leather where the seat meets the back
Symptom

LC2 and LC3: leather cracking on the cushions

The LC2 and LC3 (the boxy chrome-framed chairs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand) use a thick painted leather - tough and even in colour, but it's the painted surface, not the hide, that cracks. The cracks show up along the fold where the seat meets the back, usually after 8 to 15 years, because the frame keeps that joint under pressure. The leather underneath is still sound. Rubbing in conditioner won't help on this kind of finish and can make it worse. Our guides on cracking vs creasing and cracked leather repair go into more detail.

How we fix it We strip back the old finish, fill the cracks with a flexible filler that bends instead of cracking again, and re-colour to an exact match (we measure the original shade so it's bang-on, not eyeballed). The repaired panel lasts another decade.
Severity High
Case 02 02
Cassina Maralunga back stuck in one position, recline cable worn
Cassina Maralunga · the back won't fold up or down
Symptom

Maralunga: the fold-up back has stopped moving

The Maralunga (Vico Magistretti, 1973) has a clever fold-up backrest you raise for a high back or drop for a low one. The mechanism that does this runs on a cable and a pivot, and after 10 to 15 years the cable frays or the pivot seizes up - faster in damp, humid weather like the monsoon or near the coast. The back ends up stuck in one position. It's a mechanical fault, not a leather one, but we do have to open the back panel to get at it.

How we fix it We take the mechanism apart, fit a new cable, free up and re-align the pivot, then close the leather panel back up. The back folds and holds again the same day.
Severity High
Case 03 03
Cassina Tufty-Time sofa with loose tufting and a sagging cushion
Cassina Tufty-Time 928 · tufting pulling loose
Symptom

Tufty-Time: the tufting is pulling loose

The deep button tufting is what gives the 928 Tufty-Time (Patricia Urquiola, 2005) its soft, cloud-like look - and it's the first thing to give under daily use. After 6 to 10 years the thread at a tuft point pulls, that spot sinks, and the surface puffs up unevenly between the buttons. The cushion loses its shape. Most pieces come to us with two to four tufts gone at once.

How we fix it We re-stitch the loose tufts with thread matched to the original for weight and colour, re-pack the cushion so the filling sits evenly again, and check the tension on the rest of the tufts so they don't go next.
Severity Medium

Cassina leather sofa restoration on-site - India
Why the read is quick 12 years on Cassina

A dozen years of Cassina case notes.
An LC2 or a Maralunga holds no surprises for us.

Every Cassina that passes through gets logged - model, fault, leather grade, and how the colour was matched. A dozen years of that archive means an LC2 crazing at year eight reads like an old friend: we have restored dozens of them, and your photos usually tell us the story before we arrive.

From Owners

Cassina owners across India Restored on-site, colour matched, and back in the room the same day.

"Both seat cushions on my Cassina LC2 pair had cracked. They fixed them right here at home, never touched the chrome frames, and matched the black so well I can't tell where the cracks were. I'd been told the only option was shipping them to Italy."

Mr Gupta

"My Cassina Maralunga's back had been stuck for two years and I figured the parts were long gone. They opened it up, put in a new cable, sorted the pivot, and it was folding properly again the same day. So glad I asked."

M
Mrs D'Souza
Mumbai

"Three of the buttons on my Cassina Tufty-Time had come loose and the cushion had gone saggy. They re-stitched them and re-packed the filling - the thread matches so well I honestly can't spot the ones they redid. It sits like new again."

Matching the colour on a Cassina leather repair with a colour meter
How the tone is matched Exact match

The colour is measured.
Never mixed by eye.

Before a drop of colour is mixed, we take a spectrophotometer reading off an untouched panel - the true Cassina Black, or whatever tone your hide has settled into. It matters most on a pull-up finish (a waxed leather that lightens where it flexes), where an eyeballed blend always lands a shade off. Measured, the restored panel simply vanishes into the rest.

Question not here? Ask us directly.

How much does Cassina sofa repair cost in India?
Cassina work begins at ₹4,500 per seat, with the exact figure depending on the piece - a single crazed LC2 cushion sits well below a full Maralunga mechanism rebuild. The number is confirmed at a free home visit and held in writing. Two photos on WhatsApp are enough for a written assessment back within 30 minutes.
My Cassina LC2 leather is cracking - is it worth repairing?
Yes, definitely. On the LC2 and LC3 it's the painted finish that cracks, usually at the seat fold after 8 to 15 years - the leather underneath is still sound. We strip back the old finish, fill the cracks with a flexible filler, and re-colour to an exact match (we measure the original shade rather than eyeball it). It looks like new and lasts another decade, for a fraction of what a new cushion set from Cassina costs.
What kind of leather is on the LC2 and LC3?
The LC2 and LC3 use a thick painted leather (pigmented) - tough, even in colour, and hard-wearing. The Maralunga uses a softer leather with the natural grain still showing (semi-aniline). The Tufty-Time comes in either the softest, most natural leather (aniline) or in fabric. Each one needs a different repair, so the first thing we do is work out which leather yours is. Our leather grades guide explains the differences in plain terms.
Can you fix the Maralunga's fold-up back?
Yes. The Maralunga's fold-up backrest runs on a cable and pivot, and after 10 to 15 years the cable frays or the pivot seizes so the back gets stuck. We open the back panel, fit a new cable, free up and re-align the pivot, then close it back up. Done at your home the same day. We carry the cable to suit it.
Which Cassina models do you work on?
All the main ones: LC2, LC3 and LC4 (Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand), Maralunga (Vico Magistretti), 928 Tufty-Time and Beam (Patricia Urquiola), and Met (Piero Lissoni). The LC2 and LC3 are the Cassina pieces we see most in India. If yours isn't listed, send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll tell you.
How long does a Cassina repair take?
Most jobs are done the same day at your home - LC2 and LC3 crack repair, the Maralunga mechanism, or a Tufty-Time re-stitch. After we re-colour leather it's fine to sit on in about four hours and fully set by the next day. Nothing has to go to a workshop.
Do you service Cassina sofas across India?
A Cassina is restored where it stands. Same-day in-home visits run in Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore; Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai are served on scheduled specialist dates. For a rare or delicate piece anywhere else in India, we arrange protected pickup and return so it never travels unguarded.
The tufting on my Tufty-Time is pulling loose - can you fix it?
Yes. The deep button tufting on the Tufty-Time tends to pull loose after 6 to 10 years of regular use. We re-stitch the loose buttons with thread matched to the original for colour and weight, re-pack the cushion so it sits evenly again, and check the rest of the tufts so they don't go next. Done at your home the same day.
