LC2 and LC3 cushion leather topcoat cracking

The thick pigmented hides on the Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand grand confort cushions (1928) develop surface crazing at the seat-to-back fold line between year eight and fifteen. The chrome frame holds seat pads under constant compression at that joint. The hide beneath is structurally sound - only the topcoat crazes. Maralunga mechanism failure - cable and pivot

The Maralunga (Vico Magistretti, 1973 - Compasso d'Oro 1979) and its patented back-recline mechanism are among the most elegant in Italian furniture - and one of the most failure-prone after year ten to fifteen. The cable frays or snaps under repeated cycling; the pivot pin seizes from micro-corrosion in humid climates such as Delhi monsoon and Mumbai coastal conditions. The back locks in one position and cannot be adjusted. This is a mechanism issue, not a leather issue, though the leather panel must be accessed to reach the mechanism.

Tufty-Time tuft-point seam stress

The deep tufting on the 928 Tufty-Time (Patricia Urquiola, 2005) is the defining aesthetic of the piece - and the first structural point to stress under heavy use. Thread pulls at year six to ten, the tuft point sinks unevenly and the leather or fabric surface domes between buttons. Combined with seam tension across the cushion deck the shape loses its signature cloud character. Most Tufty-Time repairs arrive with two to four tuft points failing simultaneously.
